Setting up and running a school library is one of the most satisfying jobs. As a teacher-librarian we try to develop children’s love for books and encourage them to read. This in turn helps in improving their literacy skills, which they will remember, enjoy and share long after their school days are over.
Students need right information to educate themselves and develop their true potential, and for this they need literacy skills and access to books. The library provides access to books along with several other resources; it is a place where information is shared. This is why setting up a school library is also a great challenge. It can be hard work I, personally recommended that we work closely with many other people at the school. In this way the library will belong to everyone and can be made to benefit many generations of students.
This blog has been written to share my knowledge and experiences with all school librarians especially those who are freshers or those who have been assigned the additional task to set up or run a type of library that best suits the specific school. There may be times when you might feel setting up and managing a library is a struggle, but don’t despair. The problems you might face are common to all of us however, this blog will try to includes photographs of other school libraries and host conversations with teachers and librarians around the world; just take a look at these and remember you are not alone. Make sure you network here with other school librarians and teachers by actively participating and contributing as much as possible.
Librarians are usually very supportive, so even if the nearest library is 300 kilometres away it is worth making contact with the people running it.
